Roman Dobnikar, president of the Slovenian Athletic Federation

2017 will be special and extremely important in several respects for Slovenian athletics. Our athletes have already begun to compete at the biggest competitions of the European and world level, where Slovenia has witnessed continuous performances of athletes at the highest level. In organizational terms, European Mountain Running Championships on Velika Planina will certainly stand out. The competition will be jointly organized by the Slovenian Athletic Federation, European Athletics and implemented by the Athletic Club KGT Papež and the Mountain Running Association of the Slovenian Athletic Federation.

The event is certainly one of the most important international athletic events in Slovenia in the coming years, where Slovenia also has realistic hopes for good rankings, as it is also evident from the rich statistics, according to which mountain runners are among the most triumphant representatives of athletics in Slovenia. Optimism is further raised by the success in the previous year, which was one of the most successful so far for the Slovenian mountain running. In addition, the organization of such an event is of immense importance also for the local and regional environment in a broader tourist and promotional sense. The championship will feature 400 to 500 runners and accompanying persons, which means a great promotion of Velika Planina and the surrounding area, famous for its beauty and variety of terrain. In this regard, the exceptional commitment of the Kamnik municipality needs also to be emphasized.

The fact that the event will be hosted by Slovenia this year, is also a proof of confidence and a great praise to the outstanding organizer KGT Papež. They have proven themselves as successful organisers in the past by organizing a number of competitions at the highest international level, including the World Mountain Running Championships in 2010 and annual competitions for the Mountain Running World Cup. The organisation of those events in the past also demonstrates the prevalence and quality of mountain running in the organizational as well as in competitive terms. For this I sincerely congratulate them also on behalf of the Slovenian Athletic Federation.

I am convinced that we will again witness a new top competition on Velika Planina. I wish all the competitors much success and a memorable experience, while to all who in any way participate in the event, I wish good luck and many pleasures in following this unique event.

Roman Dobnikar,
president of the Slovenian Athletic Federation
